Lowe Family Wines

Beauty and Wine in Mudgee

The beauty of the Cellar door

Lowe Family Wines is one the dominant wine makers in the Mudgee region. The Cellar door is definitley one of the biggest and most well regarded.

I have always known the Lowe Family for their Zinfandel and to be honest I really didn't know much else, so we figured when in Mudgee we would take the opportunity to visit.

The day was grey and windy and we started to get some very cold rain as we drove up towards the cellar door. It definitely wasnt the best day to appreciate the beauty of a Cellar door, and the Lowe Family winery is a very beautiful place.

The first thing I realised as we pulled into the winery is that the cellar door is set up for the masses.

This is clearly illustrated by the massive bus parking spaces out the front and the many, many places set up under the trees for people to drink. In summer this place must be insanely busy. This approach to meeting the demands of scale, in no way dilutes the beauty of the location.

The road in…

As you walk into the winery you will wend your way past massive corrogated iron buildings, these actually are the winery buildings and you can easily stick your head through a door and have a look. The paths are very clear and they will guide you through the grounds to the massive, almost castle like, tent at the rear of the property. This is the actual cellar door and would easily seat 150 people.

The tent is up on a slight rise and on a clear day you can see all the way across the Mudgee vallley to the Blue mountains. The view is spectacular.

The staff will do their best to make sure you enjoy your stay and I thought were some of the most genuinely nice people we met at a cellar door.

The enormous tent looks out over the vines and is an extremely pleasant place to sit and taste the many great value wines. Make sure you have a taste of the Chardonnays and the Zinfandel for which the winery is rightly famous.

The tent!

I knew almost nothing about the wine range going in, so I was very pleasantly surprised at the structure and clarity of the Rosé and the White Gold Chardonnay.

The Pinot Noir and the Bordeaux blend are also worth a look. Not anything I would cellar, but a lovely drink now, inoffensive style of red. The staff will give you a little taste of the Zinfandel and it's worth hanging around for. This is a hugely powerful wine and definitely worth throwing a couple of bottles in your cellar.

Lowe Family is worth swinging by when you are in Mudgee. In summer the winery woud be spectacular. It would also be packed to the gills, especially if you are there on a weekend in summer.

If you can, avoid the crowds and go on a weekday.
