Hunter Valley Transportation
Private transport in the Hunter Valley is terrible. As of writing and 7-10 years of experience of travelling in the valley, there are only two Taxi companies you will find operating in the Hunter.
Scarcity of transport is particularly bad during large events such as Hope Estate based concerts and the Christmas/New Years period.
The biggest and most common taxi organisation in the Hunter Valley is Cessnock Radio Cabs. The drivers are all professional, generally know the area and are friendly. The cars can be very random in their quality. Mostly they are clean and relatively modern, but you will find the odd car that smells of smoke. Cars that are more than 10 years old are not uncommon.
A sub company of Cessnock Radio cabs appears to be Wine Country Taxis and the two seem to be interchangeable.
The other transport company operating in the area is Maitland Taxis. You are much more likely to be told there are no cabs available in the area with Maitland than you are with Cessnock Radio Cabs. They seem a bit hit and miss as to whether they will even come and get you.
There is NO Uber in the area, so don’t even bother.
If you are planning on using private transport in the Hunter valley I have a couple of suggestions.
Book everything ahead of time. If you pre book you are very likely to have the cab turn up on time and get where you are going (no guarantees however and I have been sat waiting on the side of the road for 45 minutes waiting for booked Cabs, during the Christmas period. At public holiday time even pre booking wont work and you can wait for long periods.
Find a cab driver you like, see if you can book them for a day and have them drive you round.
